Is Android Really Just Mobile Java 2.0?

I'm not really a mobile guy, but I continue to struggle to understand why Google's Android mobile OS is not really just the second coming of mobile Java?   It's an open approach to an innovative OS for mobile phones which promises "write once, read everywhere" capabilities, but which in reality will have a huge set of differently capable phones (and potentially other devices) - does this sound familiar?  Unlike the Apple landscape (no, I unfortunately don't own stock in Apple) which at least currently promises 1 screen size and now 2 processors, Android is open to almost any configuration, which will soon be a disaster for application developers, just like it has been for Java for mobile game developers since there are so many different configurations.

With the recent Motorola (NASDAQ: MOT) Cliq announcement, among others, it looks like Android is continuing to gain momentum, mostly out of the skin of WIndows Mobile, and possibly, Palm.  It all seems fine now that there are really only 2-3 Android phones on the US marketplace since they're really similar devices from a spec perspective.  However, when we get to 25+ devices by end of 2010, all with different specs, why is this anything but the utter disaster that mobile Java is, just repackaged in a new container?   I keep asking smart mobile people, but I never get a real answer...

I am in fact a mobile guy and I think you are very right.

On the downside for developers, hard to dev for (though faster, cooler, etc).

And on the downside for consumers, the power still remains with carriers, and they will control how much fun you get to have. Hardware guys are weak and so are the software guys. The software isn't even cheaper -- Symbian etc etc are already free or near free.

So will the world be different? Not really.
